Amber Hendricks

Amber has always been driven by a fierce passion for art and a desire to break the traditional molds of the tattoo industry. In a field long dominated by male artists, she saw an opportunity to create something entirely different—a space where women could not only thrive as tattoo artists but could lead the way in a community built on creativity, collaboration, and empowerment.

Monarch Tattoos, Amber’s brainchild, isn't just a tattoo studio—it's a statement. From the moment she opened its doors, Amber’s vision was clear: to challenge the gatekeepers and give talented female artists a platform to shine. With her bold approach and fearless spirit, Amber has redefined what it means to be an artist in a world that often tries to limit how you express yourself. Monarch Tattoos quickly became a sanctuary for self-expression, where each tattoo tells a story of transformation and individuality.

But Amber’s journey wasn’t without its challenges. As a woman in a male-dominated industry, she faced her share of obstacles. Yet, her drive to build a space that nurtures creativity and offers an inclusive environment only grew stronger. Today, Monarch Tattoos stands as a testament to her vision—a studio where women, creativity, and artistry are at the forefront of everything they do.

We sat down with Amber to learn more about her journey as an entrepreneur. From the challenges she faced to the key lessons that shaped her path, here’s a glimpse into what drives her and how she built Monarch Tattoos from the ground up.

1. What inspired you to start your business?

When I started out It felt like such a fight just to be seen or taken seriously. I always imagined a space where women could grow together, feel supported. Eventually, I realised I needed to create that space myself—somewhere I’d be proud to call mine and so Monarch was born. I didn’t see that kind of studio when I started out, so I built it. And I think it’s important to have places like this in the industry—spaces that show what’s possible when you do things differently and you’re just slightly on the outside looking in.  You then have the opportunity to mold yourself away from the influence of the standard roadmap for a tattoo studio.

2. What challenges have shaped your business?

I’ve had to figure out almost everything as I went along. There was no clear guide on how to run a tattoo studio, especially one that was different from the norm. So I was learning how to manage a business, lead a team, and handle all the behind-the-scenes stuff, all while still trying to grow as a tattoo artist myself. That balance was really tough. Looking back I’m really not sure how I managed to keep it all together but that’s the story of every entrepreneur.

3. How have your struggles made your business stronger or more unique?

They’ve shaped the whole feel and foundation of the studio. Monarch isn’t just about doing tattoos; it’s about how people feel when they walk in, how they’re treated, and the environment we’ve created together. Every challenge made us more intentional. It pushed us to slow down, focus on the experience, and build something with meaning. Consistency and quality despite external challenges has been key in carving out our space in this industry .

4. Is there anything new we should be on the lookout for?

Definitely! We’ve just moved into a brand new space, and while we’re still settling in, it already feels like such a fresh chapter for us. The focus now is really on building more community. We’re working on hosting more events, meetups, and workshops—not just for tattoo artists, but for creatives and entrepreneurs in all kinds of industries.

We want the new space to be more than just a studio but a place for connection, growth, and inspiration. We want to make information, support, and creative opportunities more accessible to the people around us. I think what we’re building here is going to have an impact far beyond just our business, and I’m really excited about that.

I think it’s all just a really long love letter to a younger me who would have been so grateful for that type of space and community.
