Our Sustainability Ethos

Black Betty is devoted to following sustainable practices. This is true for our daily routines and work in the jewellery studio, and for our operations in sourcing gemstones and diamonds. We believe it is a privilege to be able to create beautiful pieces and heirlooms to be passed down from generation to generation. However this cannot be done at the expense of the environment or society.

We have partnered with Kolisi Foundation in a creative meeting of minds to bring change in our community and dedicate our focus to supporting women in South Africa with a strong focus on Gender-Based Violence (GBV). Black Betty donates 7.5% of our online orders to the Kolisi Foundation on a monthly basis to support the cause.

We are committed to donating towards charities that look after our earth and the women of South Africa. You can see who we have supported here.

Our commitment is real

We use a pickling solution to clean our metals instead of sulphuric acid, which is safer for the environment. We also save our metal filings to send in for refining, re-using metals wherever we can to decrease unnecessary wastage. We put emphasis on made to order products, to ensure we are not overproducing.

A collective initiative

Our South African team is made up of our Black Betty jewellers and trusted partners in the Cape. We strive to make the majority of our jewellery locally, including all our made to order and bespoke designs. Our international partners have all been carefully selected, placing emphasis on shared ethical codes and the quality of materials & technical ability.  They work closely with our in-house team, and some have been with us since the start of Black Betty.

Design through purity

We only source our diamonds through the ethical guarantee of The Kimberley Process. This process is there to ensure that diamonds are not sourced from conflict regions and that there are no human rights violations undertaken when retaining diamonds.

In rotation forever

We use 100% recycled gold and silver when manufacturing our jewellery. This means we avoid the cycle of mining new metals, and we instead reduce the social, and environmental risks associated with the mining process. Impurities & imperfections are removed from the recycled metals through the refinery process, to ensure we are only working with top quality metals.

A breakdown in packaging

Our everyday packaging is 100% recyclable, and partially manufactured with recycled paper. Our bespoke packaging range is not only beautiful but long-lasting & reusable.
