Competition rules
The Black Betty Bespoke Experience
The rules for our spend-to-enter competition, open until Tuesday 6 October 2026 at 23:59. Every R500 on one order is one entry.
Last updated: Friday 2 October 2026
1. Who runs this competition
1.1 The Black Betty Bespoke Experience competition ("the competition") is run by Black Betty Design (Pty) Ltd, company registration number 2014/177860/07, 77 Hout Street, Cape Town, 8001 ("Black Betty", "we", "us").
1.2 These rules apply to everyone who enters. You can read them free of charge at any time on this page, ask for a copy in any of our studios, or email info@blackbettydesign.com and we'll send them to you.
1.3 This competition is a promotional competition under section 36 of the Consumer Protection Act 68 of 2008 ("the CPA") and regulation 11 of its regulations. Nothing in these rules takes away any right you have under the CPA or any other law.
2. When it runs
2.1 The competition opens on Friday 2 October 2026 at 00:00 and closes on Tuesday 6 October 2026 at 23:59, South African time ("the competition period"). Purchases made outside the competition period don't earn entries.
3. Who can enter
3.1 You can enter if you are 18 or older on the day you make your purchase, live in South Africa and have a valid South African ID document, passport or permit.
3.2 The following people can't enter or win: directors, members, partners, employees, agents and consultants of Black Betty; anyone who controls Black Betty or is controlled by it; anyone who supplies goods or services in connection with this competition (including our marketing agencies and the independent person who oversees the draw); and the spouses, life partners, business partners and immediate family members of any of these people.
4. How to enter
4.1 Buy anything from Black Betty during the competition period, online at blackbettydesign.com or in person at our Sea Point, Hout Street or Parkhurst studios.
4.2 Every R500 of qualifying spend on a single order earns one entry. R500 to R999.99 earns one entry, R1,000 to R1,499.99 earns two entries, R1,500 to R1,999.99 earns three entries, and so on, with no limit. Spend on separate orders is counted per order and isn't added together.
4.3 "Qualifying spend" is the amount you pay for the products and services on an order, after any discounts and including VAT, but not including shipping or delivery fees. It includes gift card purchases and piercing and zapping bookings and service fees.
4.4 The part of an order you pay for with a Black Betty gift card, voucher or store credit is not qualifying spend, because it was counted when the gift card was bought. This way every rand earns entries only once.
4.5 Your order is your entry. There's no form to fill in and no code to use. You don't need to follow, like, comment, share or tag anyone on social media, and doing so won't enter you or improve your chances.
4.6 For online orders we use the order date and time recorded by our online store. For studio purchases we use the time on the sales record, and we need your name, email address and mobile number on the sale so that we can contact you if you win.
4.7 Entering costs nothing beyond the normal price of what you buy. We have not raised our prices because of this competition.
4.8 If an order, or part of it, is cancelled, returned or refunded before the draw, the entries earned by that spend are removed. Exchanges for something of the same or greater value keep their entries.
4.9 We may disqualify entries that are fraudulent or that break these rules, for example orders placed and cancelled only to gain entries, or orders placed using someone else's details.
5. The prizes
5.1 There are seven prizes. All values include VAT.
5.2 Main prize (one winner): The Black Betty Bespoke Experience, worth R30,000. The winner and one guest of their choice each get R15,000 to spend with Black Betty on any of the following, or a mix of them:
- (a) bespoke: a sit-down with our founders Kristin and Nicolene, with bubbles and treats, to look at stones and ideas, followed by the design, sketching, wax carving and casting of a one-of-a-kind piece. This usually takes about three weeks from the sit-down, but timelines are estimates and depend on the design and the stones chosen;
- (b) piercing: piercing services and piercing jewellery, done on the day at a Black Betty studio by our piercers, with bubbles; and
- (c) zapping: permanent, welded jewellery and charms, done on the day at a Black Betty studio.
5.3 Second prize (one winner): two piercing vouchers, worth R2,500 each (R5,000 in total). One voucher is for the winner and one for a guest of their choice. Each voucher covers piercing services and piercing jewellery up to its value.
5.4 Third prize (five winners): one beaded necklace each, worth up to R2,000. Each winner chooses one necklace from the designs in our beaded collection that are in stock when they claim it, while stocks last. Add-ons such as coin pendants are not included.
5.5 The total value of all the prizes is up to R45,000.
6. Prize conditions
6.1 The prize value can't be used on the I AM Collection in 9kt gold, on Beading Project pieces, on gift cards, or together with any other promotion or discount.
6.2 Prizes can't be exchanged for cash, transferred or sold. Any part of a prize value that isn't used is forfeited and isn't paid out or kept as credit. If a winner or guest chooses something that costs more than their prize value, they may pay the difference at our normal prices, but they never have to.
6.3 The main prize must be booked by 31 January 2027 and used by 31 March 2027. The piercing vouchers are valid until 31 March 2027. Beaded necklaces must be claimed by 31 December 2026.
6.4 Bespoke sit-downs, piercing and zapping take place at our Sea Point or Hout Street studios in Cape Town or our Parkhurst studio in Johannesburg, by appointment and subject to availability. We'll work with the winner to find a date that suits them and their guest. Travel, accommodation and any other costs not listed in these rules are not included.
6.5 A guest must be 18 or older, must not be one of the people listed in rule 3.2, and must show their ID and sign the prize receipt.
6.6 All prizes are available while stocks last. Jewellery, stones and chains chosen with a prize depend on what is in stock or can be sourced at the time; if a piece or design a winner chooses is no longer available, the winner can choose another of similar or greater value.
6.7 If part of a prize becomes unavailable for reasons beyond our control, we'll offer a replacement of similar or greater value. We won't add any new conditions to a prize once the winners have been drawn.
7. The draw
7.1 The winners will be drawn at random on Wednesday 14 October 2026, from all valid entries, using a computer-generated random selection. Every entry has an equal chance of being drawn, so more entries mean more chances.
7.2 The draw will be overseen and certified by an independent accountant, registered auditor or attorney, as required by regulation 11(5) of the CPA regulations.
7.3 We'll draw the main prize first, then the second prize and then the five third prizes. Each person can win only one prize, so someone who has already been drawn is skipped in the later draws. We'll also draw reserve entries for each prize in case a winner can't be reached or isn't eligible.
8. Winners
8.1 We'll contact the winners by phone and email, using the details on the winning order, within two business days of the draw.
8.2 If we can't reach a winner after trying at least three times over 72 hours, or a winner isn't eligible or turns the prize down, the prize goes to the next reserve entry. We keep a record of every attempt to contact a winner.
8.3 To claim a prize, the winner (and, for the main and second prizes, their guest) shows a valid ID and signs a prize receipt.
8.4 We'll announce that the winners have been drawn on our Instagram account (@blackbettydesign) by Friday 16 October 2026. We'll only share a winner's name or picture with their permission. The list of winners is available on request from info@blackbettydesign.com.
8.5 We'd love to document the main prize, from the first sit-down to the sketch, the wax, the casting and the finished piece, and to share it. Taking part in photos, video, interviews or any other publicity is entirely optional. Winners and guests may say no without losing their prize, and we will ask for written consent before using anyone's name, image or story.
9. Piercing, zapping and bubbles
9.1 Piercing and zapping follow our studio's normal health questions, consent form and aftercare advice, which the winner and guest will read and sign before their service. Piercing carries risks that we explain before you consent. A piercer may decline a piercing for health or safety reasons, in which case we'll help you choose something else of the same value.
9.2 We serve alcohol only to people 18 and older, and there is always a non-alcoholic option.
10. Your personal information
10.1 We use the details on your orders (your name, email address, phone number and order details) to run the competition: to work out your entries, run the draw, contact the winners and deliver the prizes. We ask winners and guests for their ID numbers because the CPA regulations require us to keep records of the competition, including winners' details, for at least three years.
10.2 Entering doesn't sign you up for marketing. If you're a Black Betty customer, we may send you news about our own products and services, and you can unsubscribe at any time using the link in every email. Guests won't receive marketing unless they choose to.
10.3 We look after your information as set out in our privacy policy and the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013.
11. Responsibility
11.1 Nothing in these rules limits our responsibility where the law doesn't allow it to be limited, including for gross negligence, or takes away your rights under the CPA.
11.2 Within those limits, we're not responsible for purchases or entries that can't be recorded because of technical failures, power outages or network problems outside our control. If that happens, we'll do what we reasonably can to make sure every qualifying purchase is counted.
12. Changes to the competition
12.1 We won't change these rules in a way that disadvantages people who have already entered, unless the law or a regulator requires it, or events beyond our control make it unavoidable. If we have to make a change, we'll do it fairly, post the updated rules on this page and say what changed.
13. Facebook and Instagram
13.1 This competition is not sponsored, endorsed or administered by, or associated with, Meta Platforms, Facebook or Instagram. By entering, you release Meta from any responsibility for it. Please send any questions about the competition to us, not to Meta.
14. General
14.1 South African law applies to these rules and to the competition.
14.2 If you have a question or complaint, please contact us first at info@blackbettydesign.com or 071 672 6856 and we'll try to sort it out. You may also contact the Consumer Goods and Services Ombud or the National Consumer Commission.
14.3 Any tax a winner has to pay on a prize is the winner's responsibility.
14.4 If any part of these rules is found to be invalid, the rest still applies.
14.5 We keep these rules, a record of the competition and the list of winners for at least three years.
